Klondike Derby 2015

On January 31st, 2015 the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 43 from Sea Cliff, NY attended the annual Klondike Derby at Muttontown Preserve. Troop 43 attends the Klondike Derby every year along with other troops from the Shelter Rock District. Troop 43 was equipped with three handmade sleds that glided through the snow while the scouts pulled the sled to the cities and showed off their amazing skills.

At the Klondike Derby there are ten “cities” throughout the preserve. These cities are usually in small wooded areas with a small fire manned by a “Mayor”. The Mayor’s job is to grade the scouts on their performance, such as first aid, tying knots and communication skills. The Scouts show off their skills to the “Mayors” of the cities, to win Golden Nuggets.

The troops hope to win the Klondike Derby by obtaining the most Golden Nuggets in a six hour time limit.

Numerous scouts attended the event despite the cold brutal day, with over a foot of snow on the ground. Troop 43’s scouts demonstrated phenomenal effort and hauled in over 500 points. It was a sensational effort that the troop made together.
